The Placement

This is an exciting opportunity to learn about Systems Administration in a mixed environment of hosted, Software-as-a-Service and on-premises systems. Responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the sysadmin department in identifying and resolving LAN problems.
  • Assisting the sysadmin department in identifying and resolving problems with our external infrastructure.
  • System upgrades, maintenance and record keeping.
  • Internal support and maintenance of our systems.
  • Assessing new software on external and internal systems.
  • Some web development work.
  • Tracking updates and vulnerabilities in 3rd party products used by Smoothwall.

Required skills and experience

Candidates should posses the following skills and experience:

  • Passed the 2nd year of any relevant degree.
  • Love of computing.
  • Reasonable scripting experience.
  • Strong fault-finding and analytical skills.
  • A methodical approach.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience using Linux and Windows
  • Good knowledge of Internet technologies (eg. HTTP, DNS) and how they work.
  • Sysadmin experience (even as a hobby, bring examples to interview) with at least two of the following:
  • Linux
  • Apache
  • MySQL
  • PostgreSQL
  • Microsoft Exchange and Outlook
  • Google Apps
  • Google App Engine

Experience of the following would be beneficial:

  • Web programming in Perl or Python
  • Debian or Ubuntu Linux
  • Revision control software (eg. CVS or Git)
  • Internet-facing server and application security
  • Intrusion prevention
  • Web and database clustering
  • Penetration testing
  • Google Apps
  • Google App Engine
  • Active Directory

Package: Subject to skills and experience

Term: Fulltime, 12 months working placement; start summer 2012
